The Cairns Alpine Resort and Golf Club 'The Huntaway' race is a shorter journey around Lake Tekapo. Just like the longer The Muster you will have access to private high country stations for this day only, allowing you the opportunity of a lifetime to cycle your way around this incredible location.
The course is the same as The Muster (see The Muster page) however the start line is at Godley Peaks Station, on private land. From here you get to experience all that The Mackenzie race has to offer, just with less distance to cover on your bike.
Please read the course description for the full 'The Muster' for all the details, remembering that you are starting at Godley Peaks Station.
The 73km route may vary in distance depending on the route taken at the two rivers - which will be determined during course marking and dictated by weather and any other contributing factors.
The Cairns Alpine Resort and Golf Club The Huntaway has two separate categories from 2025. You can choose to enter The Huntaway Gravel or The Huntaway MTB.
Both races have the same course. There will be a mass start, however we will be organising bikes into zones to ensure a safer and smoother start. Eg, elite riders first, relaxed at the back.
E Bikes are not recommended for The Huntaway. If you choose to ride on an E Bike you must be self-sufficient crossing the rivers. There is no competitive race category for E Bikes.
The Cairns Alpine Resort & Golf Club The Huntaway start line is approximately 25km from Lake Tekapo, at Godley Peaks Station.
BIKE AND COMPETITOR DROP-OFF OPTIONS:
OPTION 1: If you are staying in Lake Tekapo on the Friday before the race you will need to drop your bike off to the start line at Godley Peaks Station BETWEEN 4:00pm & 7:30pm. We will have security in place to ensure your bikes are secure overnight on Friday. ALL COMPETITORS WILL BE TAKEN TO THE START LINE BY BUS. Buses will leave the Race Village in Lake Tekapo at 6:30am to have you at The Huntaway Race Village by 7:00am. You will then be able to get your bike and prepare for the race briefing which is at 7:45am.
OPTION 2: If you are planning on arriving in Lake Tekapo on the morning of the race you will need to be dropped off (with your bike) at Godley Peaks Station between 6:30am and 7:00am. You will need a supporter to drop you and your bike off on the Tekapo side of the Cass River (map will be provided) and your supporter will need to drive back to Tekapo immediately so as to not get caught in the road closure. If you are unable to get yourself and your bike to the start line on the morning please email us to arrange an alternative solution. We will be able to assist so please get in touch: support@scenicsports.net
You will need to indicate when you enter whether you are dropping your bike off on Friday night or on Saturday morning.
There will be a Bag Drop at Godley Peaks Station where you can leave your last-minute belongings. We will transport these back to the main Race Village in Lake Tekapo. You will need your race number to collect your bag once you finish your race.
The start will be via a classic kiwi 'Bark Off' - when the shepherd gets their dog to bark, that is the start gun.
Riders must position themselves in order of competitiveness. There will be a 5 minute window for riders to start the race to allow for a good spread throughout the pack.
We highly recommend all The Huntaway competitors register on Friday between 3pm - 7:30pm at the Bayleys Mackenzie office in Lake Tekapo. This is at the Mackenzie Room, The Godley Hotel, Unit B/2-4 Rapuwai Lane, Lake Tekapo.
ON THE MORNING OF THE RACE YOU CAN ONLY COLLECT YOUR RACE PACK FROM THE RACE VILLAGE IN LAKE TEKAPO. THIS IS SITUATED ON THE VILLAGE GREEN NEAR THE LAKE FRONT.
No Race Registration will occur at Godley Peaks Station for The Huntaway.
If you are registering on the day you will need to collect your Race Pack from the Race Village in Lake Tekapo between 6:00am - 6:30am.
The Huntaway has approximately 650m elevation gain across the 73km course.
Aid Stations are positioned around The Huntaway course at approximately the following points:
All Aid Stations will be supplied with fresh water, Pure Sports Electrolyte Hydration, and lollies.
There will be other food available - full details released closer to the event.
Musterers Rest Aid Station is a café style stop with tables and chairs looking out over the lake and the Macaulay River. In 2025 there will be bacon butties along with other food.
All food served on course at The Mackenzie is included in the price of your entry.
Toilets will be at every Aid Station.
Please ensure you have at least 2l of water and are carrying enough food to sustain you throughout your ride around Lake Tekapo. We will be able to supply top-ups at the Aid Stations but it is best you remain self-sufficient as much as possible.
