A brand-new way to experience The Mackenzie - on foot.
New for 2027, we're excited to introduce The Mountain Run, a spectacular 30km high-country running adventure that brings runners into The Mackenzie by Devold alongside our mountain bike events.
Starting and finishing at our new Race Village at Glenmore Station, the course is a loop through private high-country land that is normally closed to the public. For one day only, you'll get the chance to run through some pretty incredible country - big landscapes, mountain views, high-country tarns and the shores of Lake Alexandrina.
From the start, runners head up through Glenmore Station on 4WD farm tracks, with the landscape opening up to sweeping views towards the Cass Valley and surrounding mountains.
Then comes the defining challenge of the course - Mt Joseph.
The climb takes you up gravel and rocky 4WD farm tracks to the high point of the course. It's steep in places and there'll be absolutely no shame in walking sections of this one! Once you're up there, the reward is well worth the effort, with a spectacular track traversing the side of the mountain and huge views across Lake Tekapo, the Southern Alps and the wider Mackenzie landscape.
From Mt Joseph, the course descends back into the station before heading through Glenmore's beautiful tarn country. You'll run through open high-country farmland, past tarns and across a landscape that feels a world away from everyday life.
The course then meets the shores of Lake Alexandrina, weaving past the small fishermen's huts before turning back through Glenmore Station towards the Race Village and that all-important finish line.
As you'd expect from The Mackenzie by Devold, there'll also be our café-style aid station and plenty of #legendarymackenzie hospitality waiting for you along the way.
Sharing The High Country
The Mountain Run starts ahead of our bike events, but depending on your pace, some riders may catch you later in the course. From this point, runners and mountain bikers will be sharing sections of trail, so all participants will need to be aware of others around them and follow marshal and signage instructions.
This is a mountain running event rather than a walking event. We fully expect runners to walk some of the steeper sections - particularly Mt Joseph - but participants need to be capable of running or jogging the runnable terrain and meeting the course cut-offs.
30km.
One mountain. Private access for one day only. And a completely new way to experience The Mackenzie.
If running through spectacular high-country landscapes, tackling a mountain and being part of the atmosphere of The Mackenzie sounds like your kind of adventure, The Mountain Run is for you.

The Mountain Run start line is at Glenmore Station, off Godley Peaks Rd - approximately 15 mins drive from Lake Tekapo. This is on private land and access is limited to competitors and supporters only.
The start will be via a classic kiwi 'Bark Off' - when the shepherd gets their dog to bark, that is the start gun.
Getting to the start line is easy, with the option to drive directly to the Race Village on race morning, or catch an event shuttle from Lake Tekapo on race morning.
The Mountain Run competitors can collect Race Packs on Friday between 3pm - 7:00pm at the Bayleys Mackenzie office in Lake Tekapo. This is at the Mackenzie Room, The Godley Hotel, Unit B/2-4 Rapuwai Lane, Lake Tekapo.
You can also register on the morning of the race between 6:10am - 7:00am. We recommend all competitors to register on the Friday if possible. This will allow for a smoother morning before your ride.
Aid Stations are positioned around The Mountain Run course at approximately the following points:
All Aid Stations will be supplied with fresh water, Pure Sports Electrolyte Hydration, and lollies.
The 20.5km Aid Station is a café-style stop with tables and chairs looking out over the views. All food will be released closer to the time but expect a feast!
All food served on course at The Mackenzie is included in the price of your entry.
Also included:
Please ensure you have at least 1.5l of water and are carrying enough food to sustain you throughout your run. We will be able to supply top-ups of water at the Aid Stations but it is best you remain self-sufficient as much as possible.
